    FedEx History in APAC

     

    FedEx Express (FedEx) conceived the idea of an international network more than 25 years ago, when it purchased Gelco Express International, a courier service with offices in Europe and Asia.

     

    1987

    • FedEx set up the first Asia Pacific regional office in Hawaii.

     

    1988

    • FedEx began its first direct, scheduled cargo service to Japan.

     

    1989

    • FedEx expanded its service offerings in the region when it purchased Flying Tigers, an all-cargo airline with flying rights to 21 countries. For the first time, FedEx had governmental permission to carry documents, packages and freight to multiple Asian destinations on a regular schedule including: Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

    1992

    • As economies across Asia Pacific began to grow and prosper, FedEx shipment volumes and its presence in the marketplace began to expand as well. Recognizing a need for the company to be closer to Asian customers, FedEx moved its Asia Pacific headquarters from Hawaii to Hong Kong.

     

    1995

    • The company's success in meeting customers' needs resulted in the creation of an innovative unparalleled network called FedEx AsiaOne, an overnight intra-Asian delivery network connecting 11 major Asian centers.
    • Creation of an Asia Pacific hub in Subic Bay, Philippines.

     

    1997

    • FedEx announced the world's first 'Round-the-World' cargo flight, which originated in Indianapolis, Indiana, and continued to Paris, France; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Mumbai, India; Bangkok, Thailand; the Subic Bay Asia hub in the Philippines; and, ended in Anchorage, Alaska, U.S.

    2001

    • The FedEx AsiaOne network was expanded to 19 Asian destinations.

     

    2002

    • Sorting capacity at Subic Bay was doubled through facility expansion and enhanced automation for even faster document sorting.
    • FedEx strengthened its service offering between Asia Pacific and Europe with an upgrade to MD-11 aircraft, doubling cargo capacity and expanding volume by 50 tons per day.
    • FedEx became the first and only international carrier to offer a Money-Back Guarantee to customers across mainland China.

     

    2003

    • FedEx launched its first direct flight from Shenzhen, China to its hub in Anchorage, providing customers across southern China with next-day delivery to North America for the first time.

     

    2004

    • FedEx opened a new China headquarters in Shanghai, enabling the company to be more responsive and fully focused on the needs of its mainland China customers.

     

    2005

    • As part of its Westbound-Round-The-World route, FedEx launched the first express direct connection between mainland China and Europe, providing a daily service from Shanghai to Frankfurt, Germany.
    • FedEx offered the first overnight express link between India and China as part of a new Eastbound Round-The-World route connecting Europe, India, China and Japan with the FedEx hub in Memphis. 
    • FedEx announced plans to invest US$150 million into a new Asia Pacific hub at the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in southern China.

     

    2006

    • FedEx announced its agreement in mainland China to acquire DTW Group's 50 percent share of the FedEx-DTW International Priority express joint venture and DTW Group's domestic express network.
    • FedEx unveiled its largest station in the Asia Pacific region at Shinsuna station in Japan’s Greater Tokyo area.

     

    2007

    • FedEx announced next-business day domestic services in mainland China, offering next-business-day delivery services to more than 30 cities and day-definite services to more than 200 cities and counties throughout the country.

     

    2008

    • FedEx launched the International Economy®service in 13 Asia Pacific markets, namely Australia, mainland China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
    • FedEx completed its first flight operations test at the new Asia Pacific Hub in southern China.

     

    2009

    • FedEx commenced operations at the Asia Pacific hub at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport in Guangzhou, China.
    • 2010

      • FedEx launched non-stop Boeing 777 Freighter services connecting Shanghai, China; Hong Kong; Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan; and, Shenzen, China with the FedEx Super Hub in Memphis, Tennessee.
      • FedEx launched General Delivery Domestic Service in mainland China offering a more economic, less time-definite service.
      • FedEx International Economy®and International Economy®Freight services expanded from Asia to Europe-Middle East (EMEA) and Latin America destinations.
      • Under the FedEx HealthCare Solutions™ suite of services, FedEx introduced a range of temperature-controlled cargo containers and packaging solutions for healthcare and pharmaceutical customers.
      • To facilitate customs clearance and save time and resources, FedEx Electronic Trade document solutions was launched, allowing shippers in Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand to upload their international shipment documentation electronically.

       

      2011

      • FedEx introduced a new direct flight connecting India and the Asia Pacific hub in Guangzhou.
      • FedEx released new iPhone and Blackberry applications and an enhanced FedEx mobile website to allow mobile customers in the major Asia Pacific markets to track the status of a package, get a rate quote, and schedule a pickup.
      • The building of a new FedEx Singapore Regional Hub within the Air Cargo Express Hub at Singapore Changi Airport was announced.
      • FedEx International First launched – a time-definite, customs-cleared, door-to-door service that delivers shipments by 10 a.m. on the same day of delivery commitment to Eastern and Southern China, and Singapore.

       

      2012

      • FedEx announced the ion to establish a new FedEx North Pacific Regional Hub at Kansai International Airport in Osaka, Japan to serve as a consolidation point for shipments from northern Asia to the United States.
      • Two additional Boeing 777 Freighter routes in Asia Pacific launched, connecting Shanghai and Guangzhou in China to the FedEx Hub in Cologne, Germany with five weekly flights from Tuesday through Saturday.
      • FedEx International First®service in Asia Pacific expanded to allow customers in Sydney, Australia and Osaka, Japan the benefit of an earlier delivery time for shipments from the U.S., Canada and Latin America.
      • The FedEx South Pacific Regional Hub opened – the first and only express transportation facility in Singapore – to better support customers in the Asia Pacific region and enhance access to global markets. 
      • FedEx Priority alert®and FedEx Priority alert Plus inbound and outbound services launched in 10 Asia Pacific markets for customers who require the highest level of reliable monitoring for their time and temperature-sensitive shipments.

       

      2013

      • FedEx deployed ten zero-emission all-electric vehicles in Hong Kong, the first major all-electric fleet for FedEx in Asia Pacific.
      • FedEx®Quick Form was launched which is an automated shipping solution targeted at small volume customers in the key Asia Pacific markets. FedEx®Quick Form is a simple-to-use digital form available at fedex.com that looks similar to a handwritten Air Waybill and facilitates speedy and accurate submission of shipping data.
